GLP 1 agonist medications
Ozempic. Wegovy. Mounjaro. Semaglutide. Liraglutide.
GLP-1 agonists, also known as glucagon-like peptide-1 receptor agonists, are a class of medications used treat type 2 diabetes and obesity. They work by mimicking the action of the naturally occurring hormone GLP-1. GLP-1 agonists have several beneficial effects on glucose metabolism:
1. Increased Insulin secretion: GLP-1 agonists enhance insulin secretion which helps to lower blood glucose levels after meals.
2. Slowing of Gastric Emptying: These medications slow down the rate at which the stomach empties which allows you to feel full for longer.
3. Increased Satiety: GLP-1 agonists act on your brain to reduce cravings and your overall appetite.
4. Cardiovascular Benefits: GLP-1 agonists (semaglutide) have recently been found to significantly reduce major adverse cardiovascular events (MACE) which includes heart attacks and strokes.
Examples of GLP-1 agonists include:
Liraglutide (Saxenda)
Semaglutide (Ozempic – approved for diabetes)
Semaglutide (Wegovy – approved for obesity)
Tirzepatide (Mounjaro – approved for diabetes) *
